The wife is away working tlots at the moment and so I am in charge of the blog post and in the interests of full disclosure I should point out that I have spent more of my working life commuting by bicycle, than I have by car.
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have access to a bicycle and have cycled to school, for fun, to college and for work and it is safe to say that I love cycling. I adore the sense of freedom, the exercise and the cost savings.
When I gave up my car nearly 7 years ago I was spending approx. £300 per month on it. Over that timeframe this works out at approx. £25,000 saved. If you want an idea of how much your car costs you then the AA have some useful data on running costs at the following location http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/running_costs/ you may be rather shocked by the results!!!
Over the years I have ridden all sorts of bicycles with all sorts of attachments including trailers and tag-ons but I had never ridden a tandem, which is what the 8frieght first reminded me of.
I don’t use it as often as the wife (who is awesome)* but I do get to use it most weeks and though it took a little while to get used to the different turning circle, I love using it. It is light weight, ridiculously easy to handle and probably, best of all, starts lots of conversations. People have approached me about the bike, at work, at school and at the supermarket and all of them have been really positive and excited by a very different way of getting about as a family and maybe one or more of those people that I have spoken to will go on to have an 8freight instead of a car. Which I guess is also the purpose of this blog, to show that you can live very successfully without a car and hopefully get some other people doing it.
So if you see us about and what to ask how it is going, feel free to start a conversation with either of us
* Note from Imogen: yes, I am.
